Memorex was established over 40 years ago and is today a leading brand in Digital Media worldwide. Since the early 70's when a shattering glass demonstrated the outstanding reproduction quality of Memorex audio tape to launch the famous 'Is it live or is it Memorex?' advertising campaign, Memorex has become one of the most widely recognised and respected names in the consumer electronic industry.
Memorex specialises in optical storage media for data, images, audio and video. Its core products are Recordable Compact Discs and Digital Versatile Discs, Flash Memory and Batteries.
Although a sophisticated , European-wide technology company running SAP and with more than 50 employees in the UK , nobody was taking responsibility for Memorex Europe's core IT services. Realising this, the US parent company Senior Management brought in Daniel Coleby, Memorex Europe's MIS Manager, to sort things out.
This was in May 2003 September 2002 . . Coleby immediately set out his criteria for supporting the systems that, in turn, allowed Memorex UK 's Europe 's employees to support their extensive network of distributors and retailers. Coleby had the usual checklist of things he wanted to see, but had a few additional wrinkles he wanted to iron out.
'I wasn't just looking for someone to look after existing systems,' Coleby says, 'I needed a complete rebuild and upgrade of our existing networks.'
Not only did Coleby need a company that could assist him in achieving this rebuild, but also he needed support across Europe and for many remote staff. He says he needed the help and expertise of a professional company, one that became an external business partner.
Coleby again: 'I put together a formal ITT and was surprised to see that the operational benefits of Wavex's technology were really obvious. Not only that but the scale of the solution and the cost were spot on. In fact, Wavex's bid was very low cost compared to the others.'
Too good to be true?
'To an extent, yes. But once I could see Wavex's systems actually working, I could see that their technology enabled them to do what they claimed at the cost they suggested. One of the key areas was their pro-active monitoring - this is not common but allows a supplier to be able to pre-empt issues and use less time fixing problems. Their management console accessed through their extranet was another big selling point - all IT managers will tell you that being able to see what's going on is key.'
'I feel comfortable with the Wavex people and approach. It sounds corny, but if I was going to set up an IT outsourcing company, Wavex's technology is what I would have developed.' Coleby finishes.
